Beginner's Guide to Surfing in Morocco: What to Expect

Everything you need to know about learning to surf in Tamraghtβ€”from sandbank waves and small coaching ratios to riad life.

If you have never set foot on a surfboard or are trying to progress from riding white water to catching unbroken green waves, the coastline around Tamraght and Taghazout is one of the most welcoming surf destinations in the world.

Why Tamraght is the Ideal Beginner Base

Unlike rocky reef breaks found elsewhere, the beaches immediately in front of our riadβ€”Devil's Rock (Imourane) and Croco Beachβ€”feature soft, wide sandy bottoms with zero shallow coral heads.

Waves break gently over sandbars, giving you a forgiving surface to practice paddle technique, pop-up mechanics, and balance without stress.

What a Typical Day Looks Like at Surf Camp

Coaching Philosophy: Small Ratios & Rapid Progress

Many commercial mega-camps crowd 15–20 beginners onto one instructor. At Skate Surf Camp Morocco, we keep our coaching groups strictly small (maximum 1:6 coach-to-student ratio). This guarantees:

  • Direct Wave Guidance: Your coach is right next to you in the lineup, calling you into the right waves.
  • Safety First: Constant supervision with experienced local instructors who understand Atlantic tides.
  • Tailored Progression: When you're ready to leave the white water and catch green waves, your coach moves you to the outside peak.

Essential Tips for First-Time Surfers

  1. Build basic fitness before arriving: A few push-ups and cardio sessions before your trip will help your paddling stamina tremendously.
  2. Don't rush to a shortboard: Learning on a buoyant foam board (7ft–9ft) allows you to catch 10x more waves and build rock-solid muscle memory.
  3. Protect your skin: Moroccan sunshine is strong. We provide zinc sunblock and rashguards.
